What is C.B.T

C.B.T (Compulsory Basic Training) is a training and information course, introduced in December 1990 by the government to help reduce the accident rate of novice riders. It is a course to give a person the basic skills and knowledge to stay safe on the road. The C.B.T course is also in place to promote road safety but is also a legal requirement if you wish to ride a motorcycle or scooter on the public highway

Is the C.B.T a test

No! It is not a test, but an assessment of competence and a continuous assessment of ability. Most trainees wishing to ride motorcycles/scooters on the road must undertake this course and obtain a cbt certificate. C.B.T trainees must reach a ‘minimum standard’ to obtain your Compulsory Basic Training certificate (dl196). The instructor will judge if you are competent to ride unaccompanied on the road without instruction before issuing the cbt certificate.

Course Summary

ELEMENT A: This element is the introduction and does not involve riding the machine. It is a classroom based element explaining the aims of the cbt training day, the importance of correct motorcycle clothing and the legal requirements of motorcycle helmets.
Your eyesight and driving licence will also be checked                              before we start this session.

ELEMENT D: This element is to make sure the learner has the information they will need to ride
legally and safely on the road and to prepare them for the on-road riding element of C.B.T. The learners knowledge of the highway code will then be checked.

ELEMENT E: This element the learner will ride out on the public highway, with a qualified trainer, and possibly with another learner, under radio guidance for at least two hours.

Upon completion of all elements of C.B.T, you will be allowed to ride any learner legal bike/scooter up to a maximum of 125cc. However if you are 16 years old you are only allowed to ride up-to a 50cc  machine. The C.B.T will expire Two years after completion date, L-plates must be displayed at all times learner restrictions applied. After the two year period a new C.B.T is required should you wish to continue riding. If you completed your C.B.T at 16 years old upon your 17th birthday you will automatically be covered to ride a 125cc machine, but you will still be under the learner restrictions and L-plate must be displayed.
C.B.T candidates do not need to take a Motorcycle Theory Test unless they are preparing to do a Practical Test at a later date. Our price includes the loan of all equipment, most clothing and motorcycle/scooter during the day. The C.B.T course is based over a 7 hour period no matter how many days this is spread over (usually one day) this will include a 30 minute lunch break. It isn't common, but some students are unable to complete the off-road elements of the course successfully in a single day (7 hours). Therefore can not complete element E (see above), In this case they will be asked to return for further tuition on a separate day.

Students own machines must be road-legal, have all the relevant legal documentation and must be insured by the student to train under instruction.
Our C.B.T training courses are usually available 6 days a week-  starting at 0800/0900 and finishing anytime up-to 1500/1600. In the winter the due to shorter daylight hours our C.B.T's may be restricted.WE try to not work on mondays as we do need a day off

Don't Forget your Driving licence: All student's are asked to ensure they bring their driving photo card licence on the day of the C.B.T and the licence and photograph must be in date. Learners still on the old style (paper-only) licence must produce valid in-date passport along with their licence on the day.
please see :-https://www.gov.uk/government/news/driving-licence-changes
we will also need your national insurance number to allow us to run a driving licence check prior to the cbt starting
Highway Code: All student's are asked to ensure they have read and understood the highway code. You made a legal declaration when you signed for your driving licence that you have read and understand the highway code. It is not the instructor’s job to teach you the Highway Code. If the C.B.T course is continued on another day due to the individual not reading and understanding the highway code then a charge will be made for the second days session to complete the C.B.T as this is NOT our fault but the fault of the candidate.it is vitally important for you to prepare yourself for your C.B.T training by reading and understanding the highway code. These are the rules of the road and you need to know them. Not only will this make things safer for you as you get on the road for the first time on a bike, but it will make life easier and more fun.
PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE HIGHWAY CODE BEFORE ATTENDING ANY COURSE.
A1 RIDER TRAINING RESERVES THE RIGHT TO TERMINATE ANY C.B.T DUE TO LACK OF HIGHWAY CODE KNOWLEDGE WITH NO REFUND!
